Karl Kassulke

Hello all,
I became aware of an exciting possibility a couple of days ago, after I opened a packet sent to me by Dr. Patricia Morton from Rutgers. In case you didn’t know, this effort to pass legislation that would fund SCI research is not the first. In 2000, Minnesota Moves tried unsuccessfully to pass legislation similar to this effort. Dr. Morton sent me some of the materials used to promote that Bill, called the Karl Kassulke Spinal Cord Research Bill. Maybe some of you longtime MN Viking’s fans know that name, but I didn’t. After googling him, I realized he was a Pro Bowl safety who played for the Vikings for 10 years before he suffered a spinal cord injury from a motorcycle accident in 1973.
He went to become a strong advocate for those with disabilities. He died in 2008 after suffering a heart attack…R.I.P.
Well, in the promo materials there’s a statement from the Vikings organization that says: ‘The Minnesota Vikings Proudly Support Their Teammate through the Passage of this Bill’. So, I thought, just maybe the Vikings would step up again to support this effort considering Chris Kluwe has already sat for us.
I saw Chris last night at his debate with an empty chair (cause Michele Bachmann, Mary Franson and Archbishop Niedstadt didn’t respond to his invitation) in support of Marriage Equality. Chris told me that the MN North Stars Quad rugby team went out to Winter Park this week with their rugby chairs to meet with the Vikings….maybe cause Chris told them that ‘quad rugby is no joke’. So I told him about Karl Kassulke and that I’m gonna contact the Vikings PR folks in the hope of getting some support.
Now it didn’t do the trick last time, but I’m gonna roll with the idea that times have changed. The NFL has changed. The Vikings have changed. The media has changed. And we’re closer than ever to cracking the CURE for SCI. So, stay tuned. I’ll let you know if we’ll descend on Winter Park for a press conference.
remember to sign the petition in the header of this blog. Thanks.
