I’m starting to wake up from my spring slumber. I don’t know if my lack of energy and focus has been due to the sustained grey wet stormy weather here in the Cities (leaving a 60 foot tree in my driveway), or if I’ve been recovering from a lengthy post-campaign-mental-meandering-malaise; either way its time to get back to work.
So, here’s the first plan. I’m setting the date for our Second Annual SCIathlon… Saturday Sept. 7th, 11am at Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. But this time we want you to join us IN the race, especially you folks out there with a SCI. Here’s how it would work:
- You say yes.
- You find 1-3 partners to race with you (if you can’t find them or enough of them, we’ll help you pair up…or make yourself available to pair up with someone with a SCI)
- You ask all of your friends, family, co-workers, local fire-stations to sponsor you in the race.
- We raise some money for Unite 2 Fight Paralysis and our 2014 legislative campaign…and have a great time doing it.
The ideal threesome would be 2 able-bodied folks to do the swim / run and 1 with a SCI to do the bike (hand cycle). I’m trying to get a hold of some hand cycles for the day, so if any of you have one collecting dust in the garage let me know. For those of you who with higher-level injuries, I’m hoping we can come up with some creative ways to include you in the race (I’ve got a couple of ideas working, but feel free to let me know your thoughts)….maybe one lap around the lake while the bikers do 2. This is Not A Competitive RACE, but rather a fun way to get together and support the CURE Effort.
We’ll be raising money for Unite 2 Fight Paralysis and our next legislative campaign in 2014 to fund SCI Cure research here in Minnesota. To contribute to the cause, go to the Contribute tab on the home page and select the link to U2FP or the paypal tab to contribute to the MN campaign to fund SCI research.
And for those of you who can’t race with us or just plain don’t want to, you can still help us by telling your people to sponsor a team and come out for the festivities. We are combining the event with the good folks of MN Spinal Cord Injury Association as a kick off to SCI awareness month. They are organizing a ‘Proclamation’ delivered to every mayor in Minnesota asking them to declare SCI awareness day. I’ll keep you posted on those efforts as well in the hopes that you’ll join in the effort.
Stay Tuned…and Please let me know if you are interested in participating. Send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or Join the Facebook Event here
